Wonderful Good Market at Stoudts
DECEMBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

Stollen is here!

We know the holiday season has begun when the wrapped packages of stollen fill the wooden baker's rack . This traditional German fruit cake is delicious any time of day. It is made from dried cherries, organic apricots, and golden raisins and citrus fruit soaked for days in rum and blended with almonds, organic flour, European style butter and cane sugar slowly raised, baked until golden brown, and then coated in butter and cane sugar and finished with confectionery sugar to help give it a longer shelf life so that you may enjoy it throughout the holiday season. Try the loaves made extra special with a band of handmade beer-scented marzipan in the center. A perfect hostess gift or for someone who has everything.

Artists

We are Mike and Donna Brown self-taught artists and have been doing art since we were very young. I work with wood, chalkware, clay, oils, water colors and paper mache. I am a juried member of the Reading Berks Guild of Craftsmen. My wife works with dried, fresh and artificial flowers, concrete and basket reed. We have always had a passion for arts and crafts.

These creative passions led us in 2008 to start Brown’s Country Originals.

Our chalkware piece are individually hand crafted and painted. These wonderful figures are created in Adamstown, Lancaster County, PA in a tradition once popular in the 18th and 19th century Germany. The pieces are molded using reproduction antique German Chocolate molds. Each piece receives 4 layers of paint and takes approximately 4 weeks to complete. Many chalkware pieces have been found in the Pennsylvania Dutch country than anywhere else and for that reason for some people consider all chalkware to be Pennsylvania Dutch. However, history shows that chalkware figures were made in several parts of the country as well as imported from England. Such figures were also made in Italy, Germany, France and elsewhere.

Our paper mache pieces are hand-sculpted of paper mache clay, hand painted, signed and dated. There are no molds used in the process, so each piece is one of a kind!
